– When Gustav II Adolf and his troops began to conquer parts of Livonia at the beginning of the Thirty Years’ War and successfully took Riga in 1621, no one yet knew whether the Swedes would hold the territory permanently or whether Poland would recapture the land they had lost. But they stayed. The many events of this epoch up to the transfer of rule to Russia in 1710 profoundly shaped the country. Be it the rather prosperous times under Queen Christina, the shilling catastrophe triggered by the production of incredibly large quantities of counterfeit copper shillings in Wallachia or the relentless hardship of repeated plague outbreaks – the intertwining of politics, economics and higher fate had also a very clear impact on small circulating coins.
1000 Shillings Vol. 1 provides a detailed examination of the incredible variety of shillings and farthings (dreipölker) as the smallest nominals of coinage in the region. Because of their inseparable blending at the time, their equivalents from Swedish-occupied Elbing and the associated shilling counterfeits are also considered. The book follows a top-down strategy, so that there is a clear separation of the material-specific features of the coins from those resulting from manufacturing and minting. The coins are made identifiable down to the level of individual dies. Special emphasis is placed on the applicability of the contents and that they are transferable to coins of other regions and times.
As results, not only a number of previously undescribed coin varieties are presented, but also observations resulting from the comparison of the coins are combined with historical events. Methodically, a new estimation method for determining quantities of coins produced at the time and a universally applicable structuring system for coins developed new from scratch are provided – it is all substantiated by a four-digit number of detailed photos and illustrations in the running text.
The separate catalogue 1000 Shillings Vol. 2 supplements this volume by presenting the entire database with nearly 1400 coins and summarises the results for each coin in tabular form with photos.
